I started my career in the construction during the late 1960's as a Srtructural Draughtsman. It was probably the change
to the "metric system" that deflected me from structural engineering and in 1972 I became the assistant to the extremely experienced
director of a small building firm based in Southend-on-Sea. Under this guidance and with studies at collage, I gained experience
in all aspects of the industry before setting up my own building firm in 1976.
My company grew for over ten years undertaking works for commercial, industrial, health sector and private clients. In
1987 I briefly left the construction industry to explore other opportunities, but in 1991 I returned to set up a building
consultancy practice. I became involved in supervision (including clerk of works), management, estimating and surveying. During
this period I became interested in the specialist application of computers for the industry and in 1998 one of my IT clients
invited me to join their company as Commercial Manager.
My brief was to assist in the development of the company by broadening its client base while taking on the responsibility
for estimating and surveying. The owners of the company lacked the commitment to develop their business and I left to join
a Colchester based group as Estimating Manager. In 2005 I rejoined the freelance ranks most recently undertaking surveying
work on the Colchester Garrison PFI Project and some estimating and pre-contract negotiations for a major East Anglian construction
group.
